  • Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day, where Fifteen thousand blogs turn their focus to environmental topics.

It was early summer when my parents went off to Vietnam. They were on a much needed vacation for a good 3-4 weeks. I was also assuming more responsibilities because my manager would be taking her 3 month maternity leave because of her cute baby boy. Since my parents didn't expect me to be doing two jobs at once, they brought in some family friends from Atlanta, Georgia.

These two people sponsored my family to come to Vietnam. They paid for the plane trip for my mother and brother and also helped in paying for living expenses as well as an apartment on Beacon Street in Boston. They were your regular hippies to boot. I kid you not. They were the tie dye wearing, guitar playing, hippies that were against the Vietnam War. And I mean that in the nicest way of course!

For those 3-4 months that my parents were gone, my life with that couple was totally changed. Their very traditional Jews who practiced lessening their carbon footprint (their damage to the environment)

Everyday, I would eat a balanced meal as well as taking advantage of breezes rather than using the air conditioner. Since the ingredients were bought just that day, the refrigerator looked much cleaner and less packed. Much of my life changed during that space in time. I definitely would like to live a simple life like that. Not only because it was just that - simple. But also because when I took the trash out every week, it was just a barrel a quarter of the way filled. (I despise taking out the trash usually) Such a drastic change to when my parents who love to cook their Vietnamese dishes. We would have two barrels full of trash to take out. As I think on it, most of the things we use aren't that necessary but somehow we get caught up in using it.

When I go off to buy my own place next year, I definitely will give that simple way of living a try and to whoever is reading this, why don't you give it a try yourself and see what it's like.

  • Craig's list post -Wall Street Analysis of Gold Diggers

Taken from Nhu-Nhu who took it from Craigslist.

    What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I'm tired of beating around the bush. I'm a beautiful
(spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. I'm articulate and classy.
I'm not from New York. I'm looking to get married to a guy who makes at
least half a million a year. I know how that sounds, but keep in mind
that a million a year is middle class in New York City, so I don't think
     I'm overreaching at all.

Are there any guys who make 500K or more on this board? Any wives? Could
you send me some tips? I dated a business man who makes average around
     200 - 250. But that's where I seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won't get
me to central park west. I know a woman in my yoga class who was married
to an investment banker and lives in Tribeca, and she's not as pretty as
I am, nor is she a great genius. So what is she doing right? How do I
     get to her level?

     Here are my questions specifically:

     - Where do you single rich men hang out? Give me specifics- bars,
     restaurants, gyms

-What are you looking for in a mate? Be honest guys, you won't hurt my
     feelings

-Is there an age range I should be targeting (I'm 25)?

     - Why are some of the women living lavish lifestyles on the upper east
side so plain? I've seen really 'plain jane' boring types who have
nothing to offer married to incredibly wealthy guys. I've seen drop dead
gorgeous girls in singles bars in the east village. What's the story
     there?

     - Jobs I should look out for? Everyone knows - lawyer, investment
banker, doctor. How much do those guys really make? And where do they
hang out? Where do the hedge fund guys hang out?

     - How you decide marriage vs. just a girlfriend? I am looking for
     MARRIAGE ONLY

Please hold your insults - I'm putting myself out there in an honest
way. Most beautiful women are superficial; at least I'm being up front
about it. I wouldn't be searching for these kind of guys if I wasn't
able to match them - in looks, culture, sophistication, and keeping a
     nice home and hearth.

     THE ANSWER
     Dear Pers-431649184:
I read your posting with great interest and have thought meaningfully
about your dilemma. I offer the following analysis of your predicament.
Firstly, I'm not wasting your time, I qualify as a guy who fits your
bill; that is I make more than $500K per year. That said here's how I
     see it.

Your offer, from the prospective of a guy like me, is plain and simple a
cr@ppy business deal. Here's why. Cutting through all the B.S., what you
suggest is a simple trade: you bring your looks to the party and I bring
my money. Fine, simple. But here's the rub, your looks will fade and my
money will likely continue into perpetuity...in fact, it is very likely
that my income increases but it is an absolute certainty that you won't
     be getting any more beautiful!

So, in economic terms you are a depreciating asset and I am an earning
asset. Not only are you a depreciating asset, your depreciation
accelerates! Let me explain, you're 25 now and will likely stay pretty
hot for the next 5 years, but less so each year. Then the fade begins in
earnest. By 35 stick a fork in you!

So in Wall Street terms, we would call you a trading position, not a buy
and hold...hence the rub...marriage. It doesn't make good business sense
to "buy you" (which is what you're asking) so I'd rather lease. In case
you think I'm being cruel, I would say the following. If my money were
to go away, so would you, so when your beauty fades I need an out. It's
as simple as that. So a deal that makes sense is dating, not marriage.

Separately, I was taught early in my career about efficient markets. So,
I wonder why a girl as "articulate, classy and spectacularly beautiful"
as you has been unable to find your sugar daddy. I find it hard to
believe that if you are as gorgeous as you say you are that the $500K
hasn't found you, if not only for a tryout.

By the way, you could always find a way to make your own money and then
we wouldn't need to have this difficult conversation.

With all that said, I must say you're going about it the right way.
     Classic "pump and dump."
I hope this is helpful, and if you want to enter into some sort of
     lease, let me know.

  • 2 Goals Realized

I've finished two goals. I completed the song Everlong by Foo Fighters. Despite being done with it, I made another goal to be able to play it and sing it at the same time.

The other was singing Sweet Caroline at a Boston Red Sox game. I didn't expect to be able to do it this year as I got two tickets for my friend as a gift. However, she ended up not being able to go. I went Friday and guess what... They clinched the AL east division title that day. What luck!

One of the few things that have lit a fire under me to start completing some goals is a lecture by Randy Pausch. Randy Pausch is a professor at Carnegie Mellon. This class that he lectures offers the question : If you were to give one last lecture before you died, what would you teach? Check it out

  • Covering the bases

I've been fairly productive in the past week.

I have been going to Phillips Academy to practice my tennis serves. One of my mistakes when playing a game is not practicing my tennis swing. It takes me about 20-30 practice serves to get things going. It's easy to see when I'm warmed up when all of my serves go into the service box. I've also been able to improve my first serve power and accuracy. Once I'm warmed up, I've got much more than half of my serves in with decent speed. After each practice, I've felt a good tightness in my core since I'm now using my body to help produce some more speed.

This past weekend, I went to Mike's to practice the guitar. I can play each chord of Everlong by Foo Fighters but I still have trouble with timing, compacting my guitar strokes, and lobster clawing the strings. Once I improve on that, as well as memorizing the entire tablature, I'll be set to show it off by video. Don't laugh since I'm still mistake prone :)

I was considering buying clothes / furniture for myself but in the end I decided to take those off the list. My needs for it are very low. I'll still buy some clothes for the fall season but furniture I'll skip out on.

As for painting the room, I think I've finally chosen the color. I'm shooting for the finish during this next weekend.

At work, I was recognized for my labor. $100 dollar gift card to pick and choose. I was contemplating a new snowboard but REI doesn't offer any discounts on their good boards. Forget a snowboard then...

    Confessions of a former roommate:

My roommate and his chick were completely silent but i was on the top
bunk and the whole thing would rock back and forth. if it werent for
his horrible rhythm i probably would have been rocked to sleep like an
    infant.

When there was a fire alarm, I left you sleeping in the room while I escaped to safety.

  • Things to do

    Real Estate License
One of the requisites of a real estate broker's license is to have 24 hours of classes. I'll make an attempt to sign up and take those classes. Supposedly, it can be cranked out in one weekend. I'd like to learn more subjects such as appraisals as well.

    Painting the Bedroom
For now, I'll choose a warm hue since I like to spend time on a weekend afternoon reading news and playing the guitar. Simple, easy, and quick.

    Buying Room Furniture
I've got a few things I need to buy : Mirror for my closet, Art for the wall, Cheap rug, Coffee Table, Two compact chairs and perhaps a Bed frame.

    Buying Clothing & Accessories
New dress shoes for work, Tailored dress shirts, Messenger bag for work, Umbrella, Sunglasses, Glasses, Watch, and penny loafers.

9 month CD from Sovereign Bank

    Title says it all

    Install Linux on my Desktop
Linux looks so awesome. Try this on for size - > Compiz Fusion on Linux

  • Turning thoughts into action

Everyone does it.  They start thinking of things that want to do and end up not doing it and it's not just New Year's resolutions.

I think so many things and I want to be able to do it. Just today I was fantasizing about having the ability to do wood work. The more I think on it, the less passionate I get about it. Not just because of the time that goes into it, but the fact that I keep meandering off the road I am trying to focus on. It happens fairly often with me. I will be in the midst of something important, and a thought will pop into my head that leads to another thought until I'm far off track with what I want to do. Focus has been one of my weak points and I don't want to become a person who says one thing but never follows up on it. I won't stop thinking of ideas but I will try to take the steps necessary towards making it happen instead of jumping to and fro from one idea to the next.

  • Something Interesting

Here are a list of items that I thought were pretty interesting to have

    TV-B-Gone

    tv_b_gone

I can't count the number of times I wish I had one of these.
Especially at airports when there's three televisions all within a 15
foot radius each on different channels...drives me crazy. This little
remote will turn off virutally any television within a 20 to 50 foot
range, all with a press of a button. Of course, your magic powers could
cause some upset, but I think sometimes a break from all the TV noise
is a very, very good thing.

May take up to 69 seconds for the television to turn off (90% of televisions should turn off within 17 seconds).

    Time - Tag

    Tag watch

This inconspicuous little tag from Vessel affixes to your sleeve when you don't feel like wearing a watch.

    Fuchs (Fox) Messenger Bag

    Fox Messenger Bag

This would be super handy- a bag that adjusts to your needs
depending on how much stuff you're carrying around. Plus, a 15" Laptop
    sleeve is included.

"Ingeniously designed, the entire bag can be folded apart and
reclosed to fit whatever volume you need. Locked securely in place with
super wide velcro, the water repellent Wool Felt bag can be carried a
multitude of ways and its orientation can be changed with the flick of
    a wrist."

Risk It / Play It Safe Coin

    Coin

A simple way to make up your mind (would also be a thoughtful gift for someone with a decision looming over their heads)...

    materials: pewter
    dimensions: 1" in diameter

    Also available: 'sex/tv', 'my turn/your turn', 'naughty/nice'

    Speed Laces

    twosneakers-text

Have you seen these yet? I think they're pretty neat and definitely
look a little snazzier than regular ol' laces. The grey things screw
into the existing holes of your sneakers and then you thread the new
stretchy (or non-strechy if you prefer) laces in/around and suddenly
your old sneakers look a whole lot cooler (and supposedly more comfy
    too).

Lots of color options for laces to choose from; fittings are available in off-white, gray, and black.

    Card Bottle Opener

    Bottle Opener

This is simply the best bottle-opener I've ever seen: It fits in
your wallet and is far less obtrusive than a key-chain bottle opener.

    brushed stainless steel.

    Deep Boxes

    Just-bef-dawn

These are really great, and I won't even try to describe them myself:

"Deep Boxes are a revolutionary development in the evolution of
cards and gifts. Three-dimensional morsels of timeless wisdom, Deep
Boxes convey much more than a card yet provide all the same
functionality. After inscribing the box bottom with a personal message,
the giver presents the box to someone in need of non-hokey affirmation.
The recipient opens the box to find an unexpected reflection and
message, superimposed onto his or her delighted face. Afterward the box
becomes an objet de display, a container for precious items, or even
something we haven’t yet thought up."

    etwork 70w Bookcase in Ebony

    bamboo bookcase

Made from environmentally friendly bamboo, this bookcase is just right for a long-term storage piece.

    ebony finish with lacquer coating

    Wall Slant

    Wall_Slant

"Constructed of eco-friendly bamboo ply, the Wall Slant shelf is part
of the forward-thinking furniture line offered by Rhubarb Decor. It
boasts useful spaces for books to lean naturally, reducing fatigue on
    their spines.

    Shoe Rack

    Shoe Rack

I think this is one of those things that you don't fully appreciate
until you actually own it. It would certainly organize entryways and
decrease the chance of tripping over stray shoes. We've posted this
before a while ago; now it's available in the smaller size at a
    slightly more affordable price.

"The Horizontal Shoe Rack (2004) is a wall-mounted solution for
organizing shoes. The simple design gives footwear the appearance of
floating in air, and by taking shoes off the floor it simplifies the
process of sweeping or vacuuming underneath."

    Brushed stainless steel.

    Timeless Watch

    Timeless watch

Make an anti-watch statement with this very witty bracelet.

"Seifart plays with the trend in which watches are increasingly being
used as fashion accessories rather than as a way of telling time. This
timeless bracelet is made from stainless steel and has a traditional
    fold-over clasp."

  • Day 2

It's the second day of Project Untitled. I feel disconnected from the world. I may still be on the internet at times but without aim or facebook, my friends no longer contact me. It's understandable since we never really used email or the phone to keep in touch.

It feels as if I'm back in high school when I had nothing to do but study. I've been much more productive because  every time I drift towards the computer to check facebook or aim, I remember that I promised to myself to seek out better ways to deal with my time.

It seems to be clicking now though. I'm much more vigilant with what's going on in my mind. I start to think, "Oh I'll put that off to later." I would usually go into indifference mode and let it slide. Now I go and act out what I want to do. Much like my work today.

However, I still couldn't get up to go to the gym despite my alarm ringing at 5 until 6.  I do plan on going in the evening but I really wanted to go twice a day. That way I don't have to overwork myself in one setting. Instead, I'd divide the workload and let my body rest in between. I'm sure it'll have bigger gains since I jump start my body at two points in the day.

Yesterday, I went to Mike's to watch the Patriots game. It was exciting watching Brady and Moss connect. Afterwards, we played some music. Dashboard Confessional's Stolen.  The song is intensely easy although the vocals is difficult. Listening to Mike and Kiet play their instruments while I tried to sing a note was difficult. I don't think I'm cut out for singing. My voice is mediocre at best anyways. Now, we need someone to sing vocals and a drummer. Ah well.

Saturday night, we went down to Tokyo restaurant down near the Loop in Methuen. We were there to accompany Trung who went with his cousin to celebrate Tina Vu's birthday. At the end of that dinner, the waitress came out with a cake and we all sang Happy Birthday. At the end of the song, Kiet and I forgot who else sang out "She bang. She bang." much like William Hung did in American Idol. In response, the staff at the bar sang out "She bang. She bang." in sync as a response. That truly topped the night.

That's it for now, will keep things up to date and try to write in a better way next time.
